The Peterson Striped Coastal Story

The Peterson Striped Coastals are striped coastal carpet pythons that were originally produced by breeder, Shea Peterson. Shea got his original pair that started this line from Dan Mulleary back in the mid to late 2000s. Shea then selectively bred these animals until they had a solid dorsal stripe. Some were clean and others had dirty speckling within the dorsal stripe.

I ended up with this project by chance actually. My original female I got from Shea was my way of getting a striped carpet because I couldn’t get my hands on a Baylin tiger at the time. This female was very clean. Little did I know how everything would turn out. I randomly reached out to Shea again for an IJ he had and he offered me an adult male Peterson since he was getting out of the hobby completely.

My original female in her lay box before laying her 2018 clutch. She has the clean look.

One of my 2018 babies as a yearling, you can see the dirty speckling within the dorsal stripe.

Long story short, everyone that had Peterson animals from Shea started to breed them to jags and Baylin tigers. This made a situation where no one had any straight Peterson animals anymore. As I raised up my female, I realized this was the case. That has made this one of my more exciting projects that I am working with. At the time of writing this, only Eric Burke (Morelia Python Network) and I have pairs of straight Peterson line animals that haven’t been mixed with any other lines. I produced a clutch in 2018 but only hatched four out of fourteen eggs. Luckily, I ended up with 2.2 in that clutch and have been slowly raising them up to hopefully pair them in 2023. The future of this line is exciting, and I can’t wait see everything that can be done with these guys. I plan to work on the dirty and clean look in this line.
